OUR HISTORY

St. Mary's Salem Jacobite Syrian Church Kottarakkunnu, which is situated at a serene and picturesque hill-top at Illikamukada along Piravom -Elanji road, was established under the Holy Apostolic See of Antioch and all the East with the purpose of offering Holy Communion and felicitating of the spiritual requirements of its parishioners.

This Church was established in 1959 under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Geevarghese Chalapuram and the decision was taken at the meeting held on at Kocheril Ouseph Ouseph's house. Rev. Fr. Geevarghese secured permission from H.G Mor Yulius Elias Metrapolitan, Apostolic delegate of the Holy See to India, vide order No. 183/1-6-59. The land in requirement for the construction of the Church (1 Acre 22 Cent) was jointly donated by Puthiyidath Mr. Ulahannan Kuriakose and Kottarakunnel Mr. Varkey Iype. Due to the hard effort of all the parishioners under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Geevarghese Chalapuram, a temporary Church was erected with thatched roof and on July 12th 1959 the church was consecrated in the name of St. Mary and offered first Holy Communion by Mor Yulius Elias Metrapolitan. From then onwards the parishioners with their firm and continuous faith under the Holy Apostolic See of Antioch and all the East are attaining spiritual growth. The church is receiving blessing by the prayers of the Holy Father St. Ignatius Elias III (Omallur Bava) whose holy remnants is preserved in the church by H.G Baselious Paulose II Catholicose.
